Brief Discussion About the Main Rivers of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a riverine country. There are about 700 rivers in Bangladesh. But the main rivers of Bangladesh basically mean the Padma, the Meghna, the Jamuna, the Brahmaputra, and the Karnaphuli rivers. Today we will know about these rivers in brief.

Many rivers flow through the heart of Bangladesh. Most of them originated in other countries and entered Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, the rivers have also come a long way. Many more tributaries are born from these rivers.

Main Rivers of Bangladesh

In riverine Bangladesh, many settlements have developed around the river banks. Among the hundreds of rivers, a brief discussion about the principal rivers of Bangladesh has been highlighted in today's article by Drtechies.

The Padma River

The Padma is one of the major rivers of Bangladesh. This river originates from the Gangotri glacier in the Himalayas. After its origin, it flows as the Ganga river. After flowing 145 km along the border of Bangladesh, the Ganga River enters Bangladesh through the Kushtia district. Then it joins the river Jamuna at Daulatdia in Rajbari.

This confluence of the Ganga and the Jamuna flows as the Padma. Then near Chandpur, the Padma river joins the Meghna river. The intersection of these three rivers falls into the Bay of Bengal as the Meghna. The tributaries of the Padma are Mahananda, Punarbhava, Nagar, Pagla, Kulikh, and Tangon.

The Meghna River

The Meghna is the longest river in Bangladesh. It is also the largest river in Bangladesh. This river originates from Lusai Hills in Assam. The name of this river in the Indian part is Barak. Barak river divides into two branches named Surma and Kushiara and enters Bangladesh through Sylhet district.

The Surma and the Kushiara rivers meet in Ajmiriganj of Habiganj and flow as the Kalni. The Kalni river joins the Old Brahmaputra at Bhairab Bazar in Kishorganj. This combined stream flows as the Meghna and joins the Padma at Chandpur. Then it fell into the Bay of Bengal as the Meghna.

The Brahmaputra River

The Brahmaputra River originates from the Manas Sarovar near the Kailash Peak in the Himalayas. It enters Bangladesh through the Kurigram district. An earthquake in 1787 created a new stream from this river. This new stream came to be known as the Jamuna.

The Jamuna River

The Jamuna River originates as a branch of the Brahmaputra river near Dewanganj in Jamalpur. It then joins the river Ganga at Daulatdia in Rajbari and flows as the Padma. The major tributaries of the Jamuna are Karatoa and Atrai. The Dhaleswari is a tributary of the Jamuna. The Buriganga is a tributary of the Dhaleswari.

The Karnaphuli River

The Karnaphuli River originates from Lusai Hills in Mizoram. It is the only river in Bangladesh that flows with a rapid or strong current. 'Karnaphuli Hydropower Station' has been established by damming this river.

Rivers are one of the natural resources of Bangladesh. As we should know about them, we should also try to protect them. We have to be aware to prevent the pollution of these freshwater reservoirs for our own sake. You can share your valuable opinion about the rivers of Bangladesh through comments.
